STATEMENT BY SENATOR KENNEDY ON THE IRAQ VOTE

"This is a victory for the American people, our soldiers in Iraq, and our national security. The American people have been pleading for a change of course in Iraq, and the Senate has finally responded. Rather than continuing to defy the will of the American people and Congress by threatening to veto this legislation, President Bush should put the Iraqis on notice. The President must make it clear to the Iraqi Government that it's time for them to take responsibility for their own country and resolve their political differences. The American military will not police Iraq's civil war indefinitely, and our troops will begin to come home to the hero's welcome they have surely earned."
